Freemasonry in District of Madras

Freemasonry in District of Madras

History is story of the past events which invariably bears significance to the present and the future. Reviewing the history, particularly about, the toils and struggles to establish and develop such an institution by our elders, to the present status makes us aware of our responsibilities to develop the institution further. The relevance of reviewing the history lies in the guidance it gives us to solve contemporary problems.

Masonry is very ancient, but where do we fit in? The English had taken Free Masonry with them where ever they settled in the British Empire which was spreading far and wide including India. Four Masonic Lodges had come together to form the UGLE on the 24th June, 1717. In the year 1723 a list of Regular Lodges was published. There were 74 Lodges in England and Wales. At that time when the empire was spreading, deputations were sent to form Lodges in Gibraltar and India. The first Lodge in India was formed in the year 1730 at Calcutta. It was a military Lodge. Masonry took roots in the South India much later. Though Masonry came to Madras in 1752 all the Lodges started till 1765 were short lived. The first Lodge in Madras was started in 1786 (The Lodge of Perfect Unanimity No.150). Masonry came to our region of South Tamil Nadu in the year 1765 at Trichinopoly (Trichy), presently The Lodge of Rock No. 260. This is the second oldest Lodge in the Coromandel Coast.
